# Choosing the right oven: 6 tips

From 30 °C incubator to 1800 °C high-temperature furnace, the wrong choice leads to wrong results or a very long lead time for the right replacement. We guide you through the Nabertherm and Memmert portfolio.

Labsense supplies Memmert (climate, drying ovens, vacuum ovens, incubators) and Nabertherm (muffle, chamber, and tube furnaces up to 1800 °C). What you measure or prepare dictates which series is right.

Here are the six questions we always review before recommending a specific model.

Temperature range

### Which working range and stability do you require?

30–300 °C is covered by drying ovens and incubators. 300–1100 °C by muffle furnaces. >1100 °C requires dedicated high-temperature furnaces with MoSi₂- or SiC elements. Stability ±0.1 °C requires climate chambers, not drying ovens.

Atmosphere

### Air, protective gas or vacuum?

Many processes require an inert atmosphere (N₂, Ar) or a reducing atmosphere. Some require vacuum. This must be specified before purchase — gas ports and seals can rarely be retrofitted.

Chamber volume & load

### How much and what should be treated simultaneously?

Calculate with actual load, not total volume. Shelf capacity, number of levels, and free convection around the samples determine whether the temperature will be even. Large batches require forced convection or larger chambers.

Programs & ramps

### Is it an isotherm or a programmed ramp?

Ashing, sintering, and thermal analysis require programmed ramps with multiple segments. Memmert AtmoCONTROL and Nabertherm B500/P580 support multi-step programs, data logging, and remote monitoring.

GLP & documentation

### Is GLP logging, qualification, or 21 CFR Part 11 required?

Accredited laboratories and pharmaceutical organisations require a documented temperature/humidity log, audit trail and electronic signatures. Ensure the chosen model supports this — retrofitting is costly or impossible.

Service & longevity

### Who replaces heating elements and performs calibration?

Heating elements, thermocouples, and control electronics are wear parts. Spare part availability for 10+ years and Swedish technician coverage for periodic calibration are crucial for the total cost of ownership.

## Common comparisons

Laboratories choosing a drying oven, climate chamber, incubator or muffle furnace most often compare Memmert, Nabertherm and Binder. Here is a brief guide:

- **Drying oven and incubator up to approx. 300 °C:** Memmert UN/UF/IN series is our portfolio. Binder ED/FD/KB are common alternatives with similar performance; Memmert features AtmoCONTROL control and Nordic service via Labsense.
- **Climate chamber and CO₂ incubator:** Memmert HPP/CO₂-ICO and Binder MKF/CB are equivalent for accredited environmental and stability testing.
- **Muffle, chamber and tube furnaces 400–1800 °C:** Nabertherm L/LT/HTC is our portfolio. Carbolite Gero is an established alternative; Nabertherm has the broadest model range for ashing, annealing, sintering and high-temperature processes.
