    Description

The MA-3000 measures total mercury directly in solid and liquid samples without prior acid dissolution. The sample is combusted in oxygen, the mercury is amalgamated on a gold trap, and then desorbed for AAS detection at 253.7 nm.

The result: rapid total analysis without reagent handling, from sub-ppb levels in environmental samples up to hundreds of ppm in petrochemical matrices. Direct analysis simultaneously eliminates the risk of Hg losses during digestion.

    Common comparisons

Customers evaluating a mercury analyser (Hg analyser) often compare the NIC MA-3000 with other direct total mercury instruments. Here is our technical overview of the landscape.

PSA Millennium (P S Analytical), cold-vapour liquid sample

PSA Millennium Merlin/Excalibur operates on cold-vapour technology (CVAAS/CVAFS) and requires wet-chemical digestion of solid samples. MA-3000 measures the same analyte but directly on solid samples via thermal decomposition per EPA 7473 — no acid handling, shorter sample preparation.

    Tekran 2600/3300 series

Tekran is well established for water and air measurements using cold vapour technology. For laboratories requiring total mercury in solid matrices (sediment, sludge, biota, coal, petrochemicals), the MA-3000's direct combustion + gold amalgamation is typically faster per sample.

    Teledyne Leeman Quicktrace / Hydra

The Quicktrace M-series and Hydra IIC are also based on CVAA/CVAFS for liquids. MA-3000 complements them through direct analysis of solid samples without digestion, relevant for environmental labs, the mining and metallurgy sector, and recycling where sample preparation is the bottleneck.

    Milestone DMA-80 / LECO AMA

DMA-80 and AMA-254 use the same EPA 7473 principle as the MA-3000. NIC's instrument has two separate measurement cells for an extended dynamic range (0.001 ng to 1,000 ng absolute) in a single run, reducing recalibration between low and high concentrations.
