Katanax fusion systems for fusion in metallurgy and environmental analysis.

We specify Katanax fusion systems for fusion digestion of matrices that cannot be analysed directly. We select the fusion programme for your sample type, commission it at your site, and calibrate the protocol against your existing reference methods. Fusion digestion is often the first step before XRF, ICP-OES, or ICP-MS.

Katanax fusion systems for automated fusion

Specialised manufacturer of automated fusion systems for analytical sample preparation. The Labsense portfolio includes Katanax systems for fusion-based digestion of metal samples, slags, concentrates, refractory materials and difficult-to-digest environmental samples. The systems automate the fusion step through programmable fusion cycles with precise temperature control and reproducible sample handling. Configurable with fusion programs, crucible formats and flux recipes to meet the facility's method requirements. The fusion protocol is calibrated against certified reference materials and the facility's reference methods to ensure fusion reproducibility between operators and over time.

    • Stocked in the Nordic region
    • 24 h delivery (contract)
    • Traceable batch documentation

    Applications in Nordic operations.

Fusion-based melt digestion is often the first step before instrumental analysis, both in metallurgical smelter QA and in accredited environmental labs. For metallurgy, it involves sample preparation before XRF or ICP analysis of sulphide concentrates, slags, and refractory materials. For environmental labs, the same technique is central when the matrix is difficult to dissolve and requires fusion rather than microwave digestion or acid digestion.

    For metallurgy & smelting

    • fusion of sulphide concentrates before Cu-Pb-Zn determination with XRF or ICP-OES
    • Fusion-based sample preparation of slags for elemental determination and waste classification
    • Digestion of refractory materials and fireproof products where acid digestion is insufficient
    • Standardised sample preparation for batch certification where the fusion protocol is traceable in method documentation

For environmental labs and accredited analysis

    • fusion of difficult-to-digest environmental samples (soil, sediment, sludge with high mineral content)
    • Fusion-based sample preparation of composite materials and solid waste samples
    • Digestion of silica-stabilised matrices prior to ICP-MS or ICP-OES analysis
    • Reproducible sample preparation where method validation requires a documented fusion cycle

Service and support from our own engineers.

We offer service contracts with annual planned service by our own engineers, for improved operational reliability and stable measurement quality over time. Commissioning, calibration, troubleshooting, and original spare parts are included as per agreement.

    Om vår service

Standards, reference methods, and traceability in fusion protocols.

The fusion must deliver the same matrix today as in six months and the same matrix between two operators. Initial calibration of fusion protocols is built against certified reference materials matching your sample type. Recalibration is scheduled according to an agreed service plan and documented in accordance with your quality systems.

    • ISO 17025 for traceability in calibration, documentation and reporting.
    • Fusion protocols calibrated against certified reference materials that match your sample matrix.
    • Verification through duplicate determinations and cross-method comparison against the facility's existing digestion method.
    • Documented calibration protocols that are directly usable in your accreditation or audit folders.

    Common comparisons

Katanax is an induction-based fusion instrument (fusion fluxer) for XRF and ICP sample preparation. Customers often evaluate the following alternatives in parallel.

Claisse (Malvern Panalytical), TheOx, Eagon, M4

Claisse is well established in borate fusion with a gas flame. Katanax K2 Prime, X-300 and X-600 use induction heating, which provides faster heating cycles, no open flame and lower energy consumption per fusion.

Herzog HAG / HF / HSF, automatic fusion furnaces

Herzog is common in steel and cement laboratories where high automation is required. The Katanax X-600 (six-position automation) covers the same volumes for medium- to high-throughput laboratories where flexible reagent dosing and a programmable fusion profile are prioritised.

    XRF Scientific Phoenix / xrFuse

Phoenix/xrFuse are resistance-based alternatives. Katanax induction provides tighter temperature control and a shorter cycle time — an advantage in laboratories handling many different matrices per day.

    Manual fusion on gas burner

Many laboratories start with manual borate fusion. Katanax K2 Prime is a compact induction fusion instrument for 1–2 positions that introduces reproducibility without requiring full automation.
