    Applications in Nordic operations.

Mercury analysis is often regulatory rather than process-driven. The measurement must withstand scrutiny from the regulatory authority, be documented in accordance with established EN standards and be traceable to certified reference materials. NIC instruments are configured for five distinct application environments in Nordic industry: pulp & paper, petrochemicals, metals & smelters, accredited environmental labs, and batteries & recycling.

Standards, reference methods, and regulatory requirements.

Mercury analysis must be traceable to established EN standards and certified reference materials. Initial calibration is built against certified material for your sample matrix. Re-calibration is scheduled according to the agreed service plan and documented in accordance with your quality systems.

    • ISO 17025 for traceability in calibration, documentation and reporting.
    • EN 1483 for determination of mercury in water using cold vapour atomic absorption technique.
    • EN 12338 for mercury in wastewater and sludge with gold-trap enrichment.
    • EN 14884 for automated measuring systems for mercury in air emissions.
    • EPA 7473 and EPA 245.7 for direct Hg analysis in solid and liquid samples.
    • ASTM D7623 and UOP 938 for Hg in crude oil, condensate, and petroleum products.
    • Calibration against certified reference materials matched to your sample matrix and reporting format.

Frequently asked questions about NIC installation, calibration, and reporting.

Questions we frequently receive from operations, laboratory and environmental coordinators in connection with procurement and commissioning of NIC instruments in the Nordic region.

    • How long does a typical installation and commissioning take?

An MA-3000 or RA-7000A is typically commissioned in 1–2 days on site. We unpack, connect carrier gas and drain, run instrument verification against certified reference material and document IQ/OQ. PE-1000 and fixed AMS installations (EN 14884) takes longer because the flue gas line, heated probe line and data logging must be connected to the DCS; allow 3–5 days including functional testing.

    • How are the instruments calibrated and how often does it need to be done?

Initial calibration is built against certified reference materials matched to your sample matrix (e.g. NIST SRM for solid samples, spike calibration in water). Re-calibration is scheduled according to the agreed service plan; service contracts include two planned calibration visits per year, which is what most Nordic customers require to maintain ISO 17025traceability.

Between visits, daily system checks are run with control samples; protocols and control charts are included in the delivery.

    • Which EN standards do the NIC instruments comply with?

RA-7000A is used for Hg in water per EN 1483 (cold vapour) and EN 12338 (wastewater/sludge with gold trap). MA-3000 is operated in accordance with EPA 7473 for solid and liquid samples. Automated measurement systems for Hg in air emissions are configured in accordance with EN 14884 with quality assurance per EN 14181 (QAL1/QAL2/QAL3).

    • How does EPA and ASTM reporting work for refineries and petroleum?

PE-1000 is validated against ASTM D7623 and UOP 938 for Hg in crude oil, condensate, and naphtha. Reporting is structured so that results can be delivered both in internal quality systems and in the format required by the refinery's catalyst supplier or regulatory authority. For water, there is also EPA 245.7 as a complement to EN 1483 in international groups.

    • What traceability and documentation do we receive for audit purposes?

Every calibration and service visit is documented with a calibration certificate, control sample results, wear-part replacements, and any deviations. Traceability is maintained to certified reference materials and NIC's factory calibration in accordance with ISO 17025. The documentation is designed to withstand audit by Swedac, accreditation bodies and regulatory authorities without supplementary documentation.

    • Which consumables should we stock to avoid downtime?

For MA-3000: ceramic sample boats, catalyst and reduction tubes and a spare gold amalgamation trap. For RA-7000A: reducing agent, carrier gas accessories and a spare trap. For PE-1000: pyrolysis components and ceramics. We stock original-specification consumables in the Nordic region and recommend at least 3 months' supply on-site for regulatory operation; an exact list is compiled at commissioning based on your sample volume.

    • Can the instruments be connected to DCS, LIMS or environmental reporting systems?

Yes. AMS for air emissions is supplied with 4–20 mA, Modbus or OPC connectivity to DCS for continuous logging in accordance with EN 14884. Laboratory instruments (MA-3000, RA-7000A, PE-1000) export results in CSV/XML to LIMS, and the report format is adapted to, for example, SMP, NUS or your own environmental reporting system. Integration is included in the commissioning scope if specified in the enquiry.

    Common comparisons

Mercury analysers (Hg analysers) are rarely purchased without evaluating several suppliers in parallel. This is the technical landscape for total mercury in water, solid samples, petroleum and air emissions.

    PSA Millennium (P S Analytical)

Millennium Merlin and Excalibur use cold vapour atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CVAFS) for liquid samples and require wet chemical digestion. NIC's portfolio covers the same market and complements it with direct analysis on solid samples (MA-3000, EPA 7473) and dedicated AMS instruments for air (RA-7000A per EN 14884).

    Tekran 2600 / 3300 series

Tekran has a long track record in continuous mercury measurement for air and water. The NIC RA-7000A offers equivalent AMS functionality in accordance with EN 14884 and is common at Swedish combined heat and power plants and waste incineration facilities where Swedish technical support via Labsense is required.

    Teledyne Leeman Quicktrace / Hydra

Quicktrace M-7600/M-8000 and Hydra IIC operate on CVAA/CVAFS for liquids. NIC MA-3000 replaces or complements them when solid samples predominate (sediment, sludge, concentrate, biota, coal), and PE-1000 covers ASTM D-7623 on crude oil and condensate.

    Milestone DMA-80 / LECO AMA-254

DMA-80 and AMA-254 use the same EPA 7473 principle as the MA-3000. The NIC MA-3000 has dual measurement cells for a wider dynamic range in a single run, and is serviced in the Nordic region via Labsense.
