    Environmental labs

Microwave digestion for accredited environmental analysis.

For environmental laboratories with a large sample volume, we specify Preekem systems for the digestion of soil, sediment, sludge, and biological matrices. We select temperature and pressure profiles based on your method, commission at your site, and provide traceable calibration according to ISO. 17025. Microwave digestion replaces traditional acid digestion where it is too time-consuming or incomplete.

Preekem microwave digestion systems for environmental labs

Specialised manufacturer of microwave digestion systems for analytical sample preparation. The Labsense portfolio includes Preekem systems for closed-vessel digestion of soil, sediment, sludge and biological samples, as well as high-capacity systems for accredited environmental labs with high sample throughput where daily sample volume provides a competitive advantage. The systems are configured with temperature and pressure programs to match the facility's methods and with rotor formats that match the daily volume. Options for automation and data logging are available where method validation or accreditation reporting requires it.

    Applications in Nordic environmental labs.

Microwave digestion is often a rate-limiting step in an accredited environmental lab workflow. Traditional acid digestion on a hot plate takes hours, requires operator attention, and yields inconsistent results on difficult-to-digest matrices. Microwave digestion performs the same task in minutes with a reproducible temperature and pressure profile and without operator dependence. Configuration is done against three application clusters in the Nordic environmental lab business.

Sample processing of environmental samples for trace metal analysis

    • Soil and sediment samples for trace metal determination with ICP-OES, ICP-MS, or AAS
    • Sludge from wastewater treatment plants and industrial landfills for elemental screening according to the facility's methods
    • Water samples with high organic content where direct instrumental analysis is insufficient

    Biological matrices and composite materials

    • Plant material and biota samples for bioaccumulation studies and environmental monitoring programmes
    • Composite materials where the matrix combines organic and inorganic fractions
    • Sample preparation prior to accredited analysis where method validation requires a documented digestion protocol

    Throughput-heavy daily operations

    • Parallel processing of multiple samples per cycle for daily volumes exceeding one hundred samples
    • Standardised temperature and pressure profile for reproducibility between operators and over time
    • Automated reporting of cycle data to the laboratory's LIMS or accreditation records

Service and support from our own engineers.

We offer service contracts with annual planned service by our own engineers, for improved operational reliability and stable measurement quality over time. Commissioning, calibration, troubleshooting, and original spare parts are included as per agreement.

    Om vår service

Standards, reference methods, and accreditation traceability.

Microwave digestion must be traceable to established method standards and certified reference materials. Initial calibration is built against certified material matching your sample matrix. Recalibration is scheduled according to the agreed service plan and documented in accordance with your quality systems.

    • ISO 17025 for traceability in calibration, documentation and reporting.
    • US EPA 3051A for microwave digestion of sediments, sludge, soil and oils.
    • Verification through duplicate determinations and cross-method comparison against the facility's existing digestion method.
    • Documented calibration protocols that are directly usable in your accreditation or audit folders.

    Common comparisons

Preekem supplies microwave digestion (microwave oven for sample preparation) and graphite block digestion for ICP-OES, ICP-MS and AAS. Here is how the Preekem portfolio positions itself against other established systems.

    Milestone ETHOS / ultraWAVE

Milestone ETHOS UP is a classic rotor-based microwave system; ultraWAVE uses Single Reaction Chamber technology. Preekem WX-8000 offers high-pressure rotors with equivalent performance per US EPA 3051A/3052, plus configuration and service from the Nordic region via Labsense.

    CEM MARS 6 / MARS 7

CEM MARS is a widely used rotor-based microwave system for 40–50 samples per run. Preekem WX-8000 and M6 cover the same capacity window with interchangeable high-pressure rotors and fibre-optic temperature monitoring.

    Anton Paar Multiwave 5000 / 7000

Multiwave 5000/7000 are modern microwave systems with Rotor 24HVT3 and Single Reaction Chamber respectively. The Preekem portfolio gives laboratories the option of selecting rotor-based digestion (WX-8000, M6) or graphite block (P3, U2) depending on sample throughput and acid requirements.

Graphite block, Berghof / Analytik Jena TopWave

For larger sample volumes or pressure-sensitive matrices, the Preekem P3 and U2 complement the microwave portfolio with open and closed graphite block systems, fulfilling the same role as the Berghof DigiPREP and TopWave.
